INFERRING IN SECOND GRADE

Inferring, or making inferences, is a skill that the children will were on for the next couple of years. The thing is, our brains infer very quickly and naturally. However when we have to stop and identify the text evidence that allowed us to infer, that is where we begin to find this a little tricky.

To begin introducing this we started out with Pixar shorts which are mostly silent. The viewer has to infer the whole time. I think this got them hooked! Then we moved into inferring with text. We practiced this for about three days in a row (whole group and with partners). I think they found that identifying what they already had in their schema was the most challenging piece to this. But they really got good at it by the end of the week!

The Candy Corn Bandit Strikes Again!

Every fall (right around Halloween) it never fails. That sneaky Candy Corn Bandit somehow finds a way to take my jar of candy corn. ;)

In the morning with Mrs. Sigler's class, and in the afternoon with my homeroom, the candy corn jar all of sudden disappeared with a clue in its' place. The kids had to work together, read the clues around the school, and infer (by the text in the clues) where to find our candy corn jar. And somehow ;) the jar always ended up back in our room while we were out on our hunt!

Every year when I do this activity with the kids it is just so memorable. This reading teacher will never stop loving the kids' excitement to READ the clues and INFER where to go next!
As you can see we were cooped up all day in the building thanks to the rain so this was a great activity to get their little bodies moving and their heart rates up!
My homeroom class really thought they had to go all ninja style sneaking through the hallways to find our next clue!
Our counselor was one of our top suspects and as we passed by her room she showed us that she was feeling both fear and sadness that we were on to her! Thanks for playing along Mrs. Surovik! We sure do love that our counselor has a great sense of humor!
What a great Friday we had!

This week will be fast and furious with our program and Red Ribbon Week. Below is the schedule of events for the week if you lost your copy!

Our Fall Field Trip!

This year we tried a new location for our Fall Field Trip. We decided to take a tour of the new and improved Kyle Field stadium where the Aggies play. We thought that because so many of our families are former Aggies and are raising future Aggies, this would be an excited trip for everyone involved. After our tour we headed over to the park for a picnic lunch and play time and somehow (I have no idea how) the sun came out from behind the dreary clouds! We ended up having a great afternoon together!

Here are some photos from our experience last Thursday!
View from the press boxes!
Our very helpful and knowledgeable tour guide Ryan!
Then we headed into some of the suites! So fancy shmancy!
Then Ryan took us down to what they call the "Cool Zone". An area dedicated to helping people cool off on those very, very HOT Texas game days.
We were amazed by the strength of the fans! They could cool anyone off!
Then we headed to the Hall of Champions and the kids had so much fun with the giant screens!
Last but certainly not least, we were able to walk onto the field. This was such a special moment for kids, parents, and teachers to experience together.
Then we loaded back onto the bus and headed over with fingers crossed to the park!

What a great day! And the kids absolutely loved their little mini helmets that were given to them from the employees at Kyle Field! One field trip down and two more to go!
