Main Idea + Fact & Opinion

Way, way, way back in January we dug into some heavier reading. We learned that we can identify facts and opinions while reading. We also discussed that there are even some opinions in nonfiction text! We had a lot of fun reading a nonfiction book about sharks and then identifying some shark facts and shark opinions.

We also got deep into main idea. We learned that although there are many tiny (and important) details in stories, there is only ONE main idea. We practiced identifying the main idea with fiction stories through read alouds, as well as with nonfiction with some fun Scholastic News articles. The kids had so much fun working in partners, finding the little supporting details, and finally determining the main idea.

This was a great way to prepare our minds for our upcoming nonfiction research as well!
