Boosterthon Fun Run!

Wow! The Fun Run came and went in a flash! This was our first year at Creek View participating in this fundraiser and it seemed to be the most fun and exciting experience for the kids in every grade. I tried my best to snap as many photos of our sweet kiddos participating and running their tails off! They were very fast and full of energy! Our girls ran first and the boys cheered them on, then they switched. It was the sweetest thing to watch! Our class alone earned over $1,000 in pledges for the school. Wow!!!! Enjoy these photos!

Authors as Mentors: a celebration!

Every year I am absolutely amazed by the writing my first graders produce. When I think that they are only six and seven years old, it's just incredible! Teaching writing is one of the most rewarding things I will ever do as a teacher. The kids have such a sense of pride and ownership in their stories and it is so well deserved! This past six weeks our unit was called Authors as Mentors, where we studied the writing of two famous children's authors: Ezra Jack Keats and Robert Munsch. We noticed how they make their stories more interesting for their readers by using fun things like bold words, onomatopoeias, ellipses, adjectives, and quotation marks. After they chose their favorite piece to publish, they had a publishing checklist in which they had to make sure they had included the above elements in their stories. While that may seem like a lot for a first grader, they zoomed through it with flying colors. When their writing was complete they each created their own front and back covers for their books. Many chose to write a little blurb about their book on the back cover and it was just precious. We celebrated by reading our completed books with other first grade classes and then individually to the class. They were SO PROUD of their work, and if it's possible I was even MORE PROUD. Such great authors you have for children. If your child hasn't shared their book with you yet make sure you ask them to read it to you. Such a special treasure!
