Story Book Character Day {also known as Halloween}

Well last week was quite the adventure. From crazy hair day to book character dress up day we had a blast in second grade! Friday the kids were so incredibly excited about their book character costumes as well as the fun reading and writing events we had planned.

First I had to get a picture of all of them dressed as their favorite book characters!

In reading we went to Storyline Online to listen to I Need My Monster read aloud to us. If you haven't visited Storyline Online it's a wonderful site with great stories read aloud by famous actors, actresses, and singers. The kids LOVED this story!
After we hear the story we discussed the events from the beginning, to the middle, to the end.
Then we went off to create our little Frankenstein retelling books thank to Cara over at The First Grade Parade for some great freebies.

We kept the monster theme rolling in writing as we refreshed our minds again with how-to writing. We wrote How to Make Frankenpudding and practiced using those important transition words!

Technically we did not use pudding, we used vanilla yogurt to keep it as healthy as possible :)

What a special day! We made so many sweet memories together. This week we will be busy revising and editing our second piece of writing. More to come on that soon!

How to Carve a Pumpkin!

Last week we had a little Fall fun during writing. We practiced our how-to writing skills to write How To Carve a Pumpkin. But, before we could get started I wanted to take a class vote on what type of eyes, nose, and mouth our jack-o-lantern would have.

This kids were give a simple ballot and voted in the morning and afternoon classes.

They placed their votes in the pumpkins bucket. And the votes were in...

Creepy triangle eyes, regular triangle nose, and happy smile for the mouth!
Then we read a story about the process a pumpkin goes through to final become a jack-o-lantern.

And it was carving time!

Our pumpkin turned out slightly creepy. He actually didn't last too long in our humid classroom :(
The kids were so excited to then go write a How To Carve a Pumpkin piece of writing.
Many, many pictures of our Halloween day adventures to come! Happy Halloween and be safe trick or treating tonight!
