Apple Day!

On Friday September 20 we celebrated the season of Fall with an Apple Day! All of you were wonderful helpers and sent in PLENTY of apples for us to use for our special day. We had Fuji, Gala, Golden Delicious, Red Delicious, and Granny Smith apples. We used our apples for a little taste test and graphing activity in math. We practiced our addition stories by creating apple addition stories which can now be seen hanging outside our classroom. We also used red apples to make apple sauce in our room throughout the day. As a celebration at the end of the day we tried the apple sauce and recording our experience and discoveries on our Apple Sauce Recording sheet. The kids had a blast! Here are just a few snippets of our day!

Social Studies: The First Three Weeks

Howdy parents!
We began first grade with Social Studies this year. We typically alternate between Social Studies and Science every three weeks. Our first week we really focused on building a community with rules and how to be a good citizen. Our second week we learned about different types of communities such as rural and urban. We then went into community helpers and what their jobs are. We discussed police officers, fire fighters, teachers, doctors/nurses, veterinarians, construction workers, post office workers, and farmers. We finished off our community helper unit with a visit from an actual Bryan/College Station community helper K-9 Officer Chad Hanks. He brought his dog Kon with him to demonstrate how they help our community. The kids were over the moon excited. Here are a few photos from his visit.

Last week we went into Constitution Day. Did you know that September 17 is a national holiday called Constitution Day. On September 17 the United States Constitution was completed so we learned about what the Constitution means for our country. We also created our own class constitution and signed it just like our founding fathers did.

We are headed into Science this week. We will be learning all about Science safety and procedures and we will be applying them to a couple of Science experiments. Fun, fun, fun!

Math: The First Three Weeks

The first few weeks of math have been very basic and a lot of kinder review. We covered graphing, number sense, repeating patterns, as well as addition. We spend our math block having a mini-lesson, independent practice, fluency practice, as well as math tubs. Math tubs are the kids favorite time of day because they work with a buddy and get to manipulate lots of fun math tools! I was able to document a few parts of our math block with pictures. Take a peek into our math time and enjoy!

We began addition this past week. We start with very basic addition stories. The kids loved creating and manipulating their own addition story boards.
