Recent Wrap Ups!

Over the past couple of weeks we have been working communities and community helpers, along with celebrating Constitution Day. We read one of our favorite stories Officer Buckle and Gloria, and also had a visit from a real police officer and his dog. The kids loved every minute of Officer Hanks' visit to first grade. We also created a class constitution and discussed why our county has a day to recognize the signing of the Constitution. In math we practiced counting by tens, as well as creating groups of tens in place value. We painted tens groups of ten dots and counted by tens to 100. It was our first time painting in first grade and it was a success! Here are a few pictures from our experiences. Enjoy!

Being Scientists!

Last week we talked all about being a Scientist. We discussed how Scientists observe, record data, make predictions, and of course DO EXPERIMENTS! We also discussed how Scientists use special tools to protect themselves for experiments such as science goggles. The kids were so excited to get into our first science experiment and use real science tools! Here is how our first experiment went...

If You Take a Mouse to School Science Experiment:
In the book If You Take a Mouse to School, mouse gets himself into a mess during science when a purple substance overflows. We found out what happens when you start with vinegar, add red food coloring, blue food coloring, and then add baking soda to the mixture. We found that it overflows with purple bubbles much like Mouse's science experiment in the book!

They absolutely loved it! Follow the directions in the above paragraph if you would like to try it out at home also. Have a great weekend!

Shoe Boxes!

Parents,
Our class will be creating a mini-community next week and we need your help! If you have any old shoe boxes laying around the house that you do not need, please send them to school with your child. Any size box or shoe box will do as long as your child can carry it independently into the building. Thank you for being so supportive and helping out our class!

Library Day!

Parents,
Today was our first day to visit the library. The kids were thrilled to choose their first library books of first grade! Every Thursday we will visit the library from 10:30-11:00. Your child will bring home ONE library book for now and eventually we will transition to two books. Library books are intended for home reading with a parent/guardian. Your child will bring home their book each Thursday and it does not need to come back to school until next Thursday. If you choose to keep your child's book safe inside of their backpack throughout the week that is perfectly fine. Today they learned how to take care of their library books and they should be able to tell you things that are safe for a library book, and things that are not safe for a library book. We strongly encourage keeping library books away from younger siblings, pets and the dinner table (food and liquids).

Have a wonderful evening and do not hesitate to email with any questions or concerns.
